Orthodox Christians fast twice a week: Wednesday, in remembrance of Christ's betrayal, and Friday in remembrance of Christ's crucifixion. There are other fasting periods throughout the year such as Great Lent and the Nativity Fast which lasts for 40 days before Christmas. We eat less during the fasts and also refrain from eating meat and dairy products. This helps us to not be weighed down by the flesh as we strive to become more spiritual.
