When I first became a Christian nearly 20 years ago, one of the first things I was encouraged to do was read the Bible.
My mentor suggested I start with the Gospel of John and then read the rest of the Gospels. Then, he encouraged me to read the rest of the New Testament.
As I worked my way through the New Testament, my life began to change dramatically. In college, I liked to party. I did many things out of selfish motivations. And I wasn’t afraid to run people over or weasel my way to where I wanted to be.
But the Bible changed how I saw the world and related to it.
Now, I have come across some Christians who treated the Bible as a chore. And I would do this too as the years went on. Yet, looking back, there is an essential nature to reading the Bible and today, I want to share that with you.
5 Reasons Why We Read the Bible Regularly
Today, I want to share why we read our Bible regularly and why it will help you as a believer.
Light to Our Feet
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." - Psalm 119:105
When we read the Bible, it shines the light of God’s Kingdom in our lives. We see wisdom and truth that is more than what we want it to be. It is timeless wisdom. It is a timeless truth that helps us navigate life.
God’s Word for Us
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
I believe that the Bible is the Word of God. It is one of the ways God communicates to us. And because of this, it equips us for our lives with him. It also equips us for how we interact out of love within the church.
A Pathway
"Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." - Joshua 1:8
We read the Bible regularly because we can learn how to live. While there aren’t always answers to the most complicated parts of our lives (not spelled out anyway), we can learn how to live and how life works best.
Transforms Us
"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." - Hebrews 4:12
In my story at the beginning of this post, I shared how the Bible transformed who I was and what was important to me. This is true because we are letting the wisdom and truth of God sink into our complete being: spirit, soul, and body.
Nourishment for Our Souls
Jesus answered, 'It is written: "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." - Matthew 4:4
The words are like food to our souls when we read the Bible. The intellectual, emotional, and mental part of us takes what we learn and helps us grow strong into who God created us to be.
Final Thoughts on Reading the Bible Regularly
The Bible provides a wealth of knowledge, direction, and transformation because it is the inspired word of God.
Reading it regularly helps us become more like God, not to be God, but like Him. It helps us become people who are reflections of His glorious nature.
The Bible contains the instructions for living a life that is joyful, meaningful, and of eternal value. And ultimately, it really will change your life.
