Know the state of your flocks, and put your heart into caring for your herds, for riches don’t last forever, and the crown might not be passed to the next generation. After the hay is harvested and the new crop appears and the mountain grasses are gathered in, your sheep will provide wool for clothing, and your goats will provide the price of a field. - Proverbs 27:23-26
Every Monday at noon, a group at my day job gets together, reads a proverb, and prays. We were in Proverbs 27 this Monday, and this verse stood out to me.
As I asked God what it meant, three main things stood out:
We are called to know and care for our flocks.
Now, this could go a lot of ways, but two main ones stood out to me:
Our flocks and herds are the things we were entrusted with to steward. This might be your house, your car, or some asset. I believe God calls us to know and care for our assets more.
Our flocks are the people we influence. While most of us are not pastors, we still influence our families, friends, and neighbors. God wants to know and care for them like a shepherd would for his sheep.
Riches don’t last forever.
Most of us know that we cannot take what we accumulate here on earth with us when we die. There is an important reality that even when we leave it behind or receive an inheritance, money and riches are not forever.
There are plenty of things that will take these away from us. Maybe it will be our own foolishness, maybe it is taxed, or it might even be the fact that it may not be worth as much in the future.
Sheep Provide, Goats Provide
You own the field. You own the sheep and the goats. And then they produce to sustain you and your family and to make money to grow what you have too.
I’m not saying that we need to be all about money, but I believe God wants to give us an insight into his view of how we steward the things we have in life.
And that is more than just money. It is also our relationships with others too.
Activation
I encourage you to consider a few things over the next few days.
Ask God what he has put you in charge of in life. What are your flocks and sheep?
What things does he want you to sow into? How might you start today?
Write down what you hear from the Lord and find one action step you could take daily for the next seven days. And then, I’d love to hear how it goes.
What stands out to you from this passage?
