Do you remember those WWJD bracelets?
At some point in my childhood, they were something everyone wore. Almost as popular as the Livestrong bracelets that people wore.
When I was a kid, this was way over my head. I grew up in a church that was oddly conservative and traditional in practice but very liberal in theology. These bracelets were handed in at Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
We would wear them for a time and then lose them, like most things kids get for free. But the other day, I was walking in my yard in the morning and asking Jesus what he would do for a specific situation in my life.
Of course, the answer I got was not the one I wanted. However, it was in line with Jesus’s character in scripture. And sure enough, the action I took from Jesus’s response was right for the situation.
The Nature of Hearing from Jesus
I have been a Christian for nearly twenty years now. It sounds like a long time, but it does not feel like it. I still spend much time figuring out my Christian faith as seasons change.
But, I have found one thing to get more accessible over the years: hearing from Jesus. It’s almost as if walking with him for a long time makes it easier to hear him when I ask him a question.
Yes, you can ask Jesus a question. And he will answer you.
This can look different, but I guarantee you will know when he responds. For me, it comes in the form of a thought or response to the question that is completely outside of what I was thinking about it.
When this happens, I consider whether it aligns with what I know about Jesus from the scriptures. When it does, I know he responds to my question. The more I have practiced this, the more I hear from Jesus.
The Bible is More than Story and Rules
This is why I write Bible studies and share thoughts on the Bible. It is more than a story, a book of rules or heroes. It is how my mind is changed to understand who God is, experience Jesus, and walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Bible helps us hear Jesus and know it is him.
And that is why it is really important to read your Bible regularly. To understand God, know Jesus, and be powerful in the Spirit. As we go forward here on Coffee with Jesus, I want to share more scriptures to help you understand Jesus better so you can hear from him.
So, how does that sound?
