The second light in the Advent glowing tapestry, which stands for Peace and is also known as the "Bethlehem Candle," invites believers to go on a holy journey through the scriptures.
The passages from Luke, John, and Romans tell the story of peace and expectation when we light the gentle flame. This story is captured in the purple color of the Advent wreath.
The Shepherds
The announcement to the shepherds from heaven, which reverberates throughout the night of Bethlehem, announces the birth of Jesus and the gift of heavenly peace to those who please God. Shining with hope, the Bethlehem Candle transforms into a visual anthem to this declaration from above found in Luke 2:14 (NIV):
"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."
The Prince of Peace
With these remarks, the Prince of Peace, Jesus, bestows peace surpassing this life's transient blessings. A beacon amid chaos, the Bethlehem Candle flickers in the light of Christ's peace, comforting troubled hearts and driving away fear. Jesus later tells his disciples of the peace he leaves with us in John 14:27 (NIV):
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
Divine Peace
Paul's appeal to the Romans encapsulates the transformational power of divine peace. With its radiance of hope and joy, the Bethlehem Candle is a concrete reminder that putting one's trust in God results in an abundance of peace maintained by the Holy Spirit's indwelling. Paul explains in Romans 15:13 (NIV):
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
A Sunday Peace
In addition to representing Mary and Joseph's journey, the Bethlehem Candle is a timeless reminder of the peace that Christ, the Prince of Peace, imparts into our lives as we journey during Advent.
It extends an invitation for us to rest in the everlasting peace that flows from the manger in Bethlehem and to revel in the glory of divine promises.
