That Uncomfortable Moment When The Pastor Starts a Series on Money
If you want to see Sunday service numbers decline, talk up money
“Today, we are going to start our five-week series on money, tithing, and the church.” said a Pastor at a Church we used to attend.
The effect was almost instantaneous. People started shifting uncomfortably. The older members of the congregation sat rigidly still. The younger ones started sweating and looking around.
On the other hand, I didn’t understand why everyone else felt so uncomfortable. And when I started feeling what they were feeling, I wondered what the big deal was about.
Since this fateful sermon, when I noticed a significant drop in the church’s attendance for those five weeks, I have watched the church skirt around money or outright lose its mind about it.
And I don’t think this is the right attitude toward money in the church.
I am going to do a series on money.
DON’T UNSUBSCRIBE!
I’m not going to ask for money. I won’t tell you how you should give or not give your money. I will explore the topic and determine what God says about money and how Jesus responds to money.
The good news is there are a lot of references to money in the bible, some good, some bad. But we can learn great things and understand God’s heart and how he wants us to relate to it.
In the comments below, I’d love to hear what you think about God and Money. What teachings have you listened to that have been positive and negative?
Also, I have been working my way through a series of posts on Typeshare about spiritual disciplines. Here are what has been published to date:

It's an important topic.. I also plan on writing about money. I am interested to hear your perspective on it and what you find in the Bible. I don't think it's all bad news.. most of it teaches us how to be wise with money and how to prosper.
