10 Bible Verses To Pray Over Your Meals
A little bit more than your typical "rub-a-dub-dub thanks for the grub" prayer.
In our house, we pray before we sit down for dinner. We don’t always do it for every meal or when we are out to eat, but around the family dinner table we do.
However, one of my daughters asked what the Bible says about meals and praying and so we looked up some Bible verses. In the end, here were ten that we thought applied to praying them over our meals.
Here are 10 Bible verses that could be meaningful to pray before eating:
1 Corinthians 10:31 - "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
Psalm 145:15-16 - "The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing."
Matthew 6:11 - "Give us this day our daily bread."
Acts 14:17 - "Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy."
John 6:35 - "Then Jesus declared, 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.'"
Psalm 136:25 - "He gives food to every creature. His love endures forever."
1 Timothy 4:4-5 - "For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer."
Ecclesiastes 9:7 - "Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do."
Deuteronomy 8:10 - "When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you."
Psalm 34:8 - "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him."
One thing my daughter wanted to do was to create a prayer that we could pray over our meals. And so, after a while, we came up with this:
“Blessed are You, Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, who provides food for all living things. We give thanks for this meal and for the hands that prepared it. May it nourish our bodies, strengthen our spirits, and remind us of Your love and provision. Help us to share what we have with those in need and to be ever grateful for Your blessings. Amen.”
So, if you want to join us in this little prayer next time you sit down for dinner, try this one on for size!
